Every day, your mobile phone is exposed to all sorts of things that make it dirty: dust, food, lotion, makeup, fingerprints, and more. Studies have even shown the presence of bacteria and viruses on phones that aren't regularly cleaned. What’s the best way to clean your phone without damaging it? Follow these four simple steps approved by our experts to keep your device in great shape.

1. Disconnect any cables and remove the case

You can clean them separately with a dry cloth.

2. Turn off the phone

Depending on your phone model, press and hold the power button or two side buttons simultaneously, then select Off or Power off. For the exact procedure, see the user guide for your device.

3. Clean the housing

Using a slightly damp microfibre cloth, gently rub the back and sides of your mobile device. Use a cotton swab to clean hard-to-reach areas but do not insert it in any openings. Take care not to get the charging and other ports wet.

Disinfection method

If you want to sanitize your phone, apply a small amount of 70% isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) or 75% ethyl alcohol to your cloth before you use it.

4. Clean the screen

Wipe the screen with a clean, soft microfibre cloth, like one you would use to clean glasses. If necessary, spray the cloth with water or special screen cleaner (available at most electronics stores).

Things to avoid

When cleaning the housing and screen:

  • Do not use bleach, soap, hydrogen peroxide, glass cleaner, or compressed air sprays.
  • Never apply water or products directly to the phone. Instead, dampen the cloth.
  • Do not insert sharp objects into the openings of the device.

Beware of sterilizers

Several types of UV-C disinfection devices are available to buy. They come as a portable box or lamp and are marketed to eliminate viruses and bacteria by contactless exposure to radiation. Health Canada advises against their use because they may pose a health risk. Use a standard cleaning method like the one described above.

Good preventive habits

A well-maintained mobile device will last longer! We recommend cleaning your device as soon as you notice any dirt (to prevent marks from setting) and after you let someone else use it. You can also cover the screen with a protective film. Finally, opt for a sturdy, shock-resistant case. Come visit us in-store to browse our selection of mobile accessories.
