Planning a trip to Europe? Remember to pack your mobile data! Whether you’re calling a taxi, booking a table at a restaurant, texting loved ones, or finding your way around, your mobile phone makes travelling a lot easier. Explore your cellular options before heading off for the Old Continent.
1. Mobile plan that includes use in Europe
The simplest solution is to choose a mobile plan that works both at home and abroad. No need to stress before your trip! That’s what the Videotron Canada and International Mobile plan offers. This plan covers 100 destinations, including about 40 in Europe alone. See the list of countries included.
What does that mean, exactly? You can land in France, climb the Swiss Alps, and then stroll under the Italian sun without having to change a thing on your phone. Now, that’s freedom!
Main advantages of the Canada and International plan:
- No need to change your SIM card.
- You keep your phone number.
- You can move seamlessly between included destinations.
- Calls, text messages, and data are deducted from your plan, just like at home.
- Technical support is available 24/7 by calling 611.

Option 2: Travel extension for your mobile plan
If you don’t want to subscribe to a plan that includes use in Europe, you can still use your mobile phone just like at home with a travel option available from your provider.
Videotron offers the Daily Traveller Pass. This option, payable by the day, extends your plan. It lets you make calls, send and receive text messages, and use your data elsewhere in the world for a fixed daily rate. You decide when you need it, one day at a time. It’s convenient when you know you’re going to have access to Wi-Fi on some days and not on others.

Did you know?
In your customer account, a foreign data overage charge limit is enabled by default. This limit blocks your data as soon as your usage hits $100 (including with the Daily Traveller Pass). This keeps your invoice under control! You can then choose to remove the limit if you need more data.
Option 3: Local SIM or eSIM card
Another option is to purchase a SIM or eSIM card that works in the area you’ll be visiting. These cards give you a certain amount of mobile data during a set period of time. But there are a few things to consider:
- Sometimes you have to activate the card when you get there, which can be tricky.
- A local SIM card assigns you a new number. You can’t use your phone number or get voicemail messages until you put your Canadian SIM card back in your device.
- If you’re visiting multiple European countries, check to make sure your SIM or eSIM card covers all of them.
- Most eSIM cards available in Europe include data only. Calls and text messages are excluded.
- To use an eSIM card, your device must be compatible. Refer to your phone’s user guide to find out.
In a nutshell, a SIM or eSIM card for Europe can be a cost-effective option, but it takes careful planning before leaving as well as ease with the technology.
The world is your oyster!
There are various options for using your phone in Europe. You’ll need to choose the one that best meets your data needs—and provides peace of mind. Have a nice trip!
