Gamification
Samsung’s fifth generation of foldable smartphones is now on the market. The Galaxy Z Flip6 was much anticipated and does not disappoint! Here’s what we thought about it, its main improvements over previous models, and why you might want to put it in your pocket.
Our opinion
The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6 is sure to become a top contender in its category with its enhanced rear camera, extended range, and solid performance. You’ll love its compact size and satisfying “clap” upon closing. We also like the fact that you can bend the phone to get the best angle to take a picture. Galaxy AI is intelligently integrated into the phone, in particular the Photo Assistant and Message Assistant, which we believe are the most useful features. The Galaxy Z Flip6 may be less suitable for professional use, given its smaller screens, but it’s a fun and well-thought-out device that proves that foldable smartphones are here to stay.
Strengths
- Samsung’s most compact foldable smartphone to date. It fits easily into any pocket, and the internal screen is protected when the smartphone is folded in.
- Galaxy AI: Samsung’s artificial intelligence functions are present on other phone models, but set the Galaxy Z Flip6 apart from the foldable smartphones of other brands on the market. The Interpreter function is brilliantly built into the phone. In Flex mode, the smartphone displays the translations on the main screen and on the external screen, facing the caller, to facilitate in-person conversation. The feature is available in 16 languages (4 more will be added by the end of 2024). As an added bonus, it can be accessed directly on the device without an Internet connection.
- High-quality camera: This is the best camera built into a Flip (from 12+12 MP on the Z Flip5 to 50+12 MP on the Z Flip6). The 50 MP lens is a wide angle, with 2x optical quality zoom. The second 12 MP lens is an ultra-wide angle. Also to be enjoyed is the ProVisual engine, which offers better face lighting for portraits (who doesn’t like to look better in their photos? 😉).
- FlexCam: In Flex mode (semi-folded smartphone), the camera automatically frames the photo to capture everyone, making it easier to take perfect group shots! You can also play with the phone’s tilt angle to get the best picture.
- Longer battery life: We’re talking 4,000 mAh (the Z Flip4 and 5 had a 3,700 mAh battery). In practice, you get up to 68 hours of audio reading and up to 11 hours of video reading. This was an expected improvement, as many criticized the old Z Flips for the battery quickly losing its charge.
- Best processor: The Snapdragon® 8 Gen 3 is the most powerful processor on a Flip so far. An integrated cooling system also appears for the first time on a Galaxy Z Flip. It allows the phone to maintain good performance for longer.
- Durability: The Z Flip6 is the most robust Flip yet. A screen protector is pre-installed on the folding screen. If you wish, you can buy an extra protector for the external screen and there are many stylish cases to choose from. The phone edges are reinforced. The Flex hinge is very discrete. We like the fact that despite its small size and foldable screen, the phone appears sturdy in your hands, meaning you won’t spend your time worrying about breaking it.
- Flex screen options: You can do a lot of things without unfolding your smartphone: pay with Samsung Wallet, change music, or text. Also, the cover screen offers many customization options, such as the background that changes with the time or weather (if it is snowing outside, it snows in the photo—it’s a cute feature!).
Weaknesses
- Free time-limited Galaxy AI: Samsung says Galaxy AI will be free until the end of 2025. Will you then have to subscribe, and at what price? We don’t know yet.
- Small screen size: The compact look of the Z Flip6 may appeal to some, but not to those who prefer a wider screen to play, work, or watch videos. Its two-screen full-width cousin, the Galaxy Z Fold6 may be a better option should you fall into the latter category.
- Medium dust resistance: The phone meets the IP48 rating, meaning it has good water resistance but medium dust resistance (protection against objects over 1 mm in diameter). Other Samsung smartphones, such as the Galaxy S24 and its variants, offer better protection against solid objects. If you bring your Galaxy Z Flip6 to the beach, for example, be careful not to drop it in the sand.

Ergonomics and design
The Galaxy Z Flip6 comes in three colours: blue, silver shadow, and mint (our favourite!). It is also available in yellow at select locations, and in black, white, and peach only when ordered directly from the Samsung website. The phone is slightly more compact than the Z Flip5, making it the most compact Samsung foldable phone to date. It therefore retains a light weight; it is easy to hold in one hand. The “drip” hinge is discrete.
Performance
The pre-installed operating system is Android 14. Thanks to the new cooling system built into the phone, the processor maintains good performance for longer. We are moving to a Snapdragon® 8 Gen 3 processor, which offers significant power gain. Artificial intelligence, which is rather greedy, is therefore used seamlessly. The battery offers improved battery life, but does not accommodate the higher-end non-foldable smartphones. Of note: the phone comes with 7 years of safety updates.
