Big news: the artificial intelligence (AI) features introduced with great fanfare for Samsung S24 mobile phones are now available on the Galaxy S23 line and on Z Fold5 and Z Flip5 devices! In early April, Samsung rolled out an update to the One UI 6 operating system, taking the power of previous-generation phones to a whole new level. Let’s take a closer look.
What is Galaxy AI?
Galaxy AI is the name given to the artificial intelligence that comes with Samsung’s newest mobile devices. It’s based on Google Cloud’s generative AI, which is itself powered by Gemini, Google’s AI model. With the arrival of AI on mobile devices, Samsung wanted to create tools that help people with the things they use their phones for every single day: communication, research, productivity, and creativity.
Communication
Galaxy AI’s first application enhances the most fundamental role of a phone: communication. Samsung seeks to break down language barriers with real-time, two-way voice and text translation. The new features are as follows:
- Live Translate: Have a telephone conversation with someone who speaks a different language, and Live Translate will translate your conversation as it happens.
- Chat Assist: Tweak the tone of a written message or translate it in real time.
- Interpreter: See live conversations in a different language transcribed on the screen so you can easily talk to the people you meet. It even works without a cellular network or Wi-Fi.
The beauty in all this is that you don’t need to use a third-party application to take advantage of the features. They are built into the phone, and that adds an extra layer of confidentiality to your conversations.
Search
The Circle to Search with Google feature makes searches easier than ever. Press and hold the Home button, then circle, highlight, or tap anything on the screen to get search results.
Say you see a landmark in a travel photo your friend posted on Instagram. You can use Circle to Search and circle the landmark to get information about the tourist attraction, without even having to leave the app. This is what Samsung calls intuitive discovery.
Productivity
Galaxy AI also helps you become more efficient. Think of these new features as your very own assistant:
- Note Assist: Format, translate, and summarize your notes.
- Browsing Assist: Get a summary of multiple news articles.
- Transcript Assist: Get a transcript of a recorded meeting, as well as a translation.
Creativity
The Galaxy AI ProVisual Engine gives you a series of photo-enhancement tools powered by AI:
- Generative Edit: When you move an item in a photo or reframe an image, AI generates a perfect background to fill the space.
- Edit Suggestion: Get suggestions for enhancing your photos in a jiffy.
- Instant Slo-Mo: If you want to slow down a fast-action video, AI will generate additional images (frames) to produce a seamless slow-motion effect.
