  9. Prepare your tech checklist
  10. Awaken your inner boss

1.Book your truck or movers without delay

As soon as your lease or sales contract is signed, book your movers or rental truck—either by phone or through an app or online service. Spots fill up fast! This is especially true if you’re planning a move on July 1 or over a long weekend.

Extra tip: avoid rushes by opting for a Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday move.

2.Declutter, sort, and recycle before packing your boxes

Do a big clean-out BEFORE you go! Give a second life to everything that no longer serves a purpose or sparks joy. Sort through all your belongings:

  • Items still in good condition? Take them to your neighbourhood eco-centre or put them up for sale on a classifieds platform like Marketplace.
  • Your obsolete computer equipment can be donated to the OPEQ, an organization that recovers computers to recondition and redistribute them in schools.
  • When it comes to your small electronic devices (phones, tablets, accessories, TV terminals, etc.), you can drop them off at a Videotron store through the revi Program.

With so many solutions for an eco-friendly move, the trash can should only be used as a last resort.

3.Manage your change of address online

Almost all your address changes can be done on your phone. The Service québécois de changement d’adresse (SQCA) submits your new contact information to a variety of provincial ministries in a single online process.

As for Hydro-Québec, a $25 credit is offered when you use their online service to update your address—an easy way to save a few bucks!

Don’t forget your digital accounts: bank, insurance, delivery subscriptions, online shops. A full tour of your profiles before the big day will make the transition easier.

And finally, another great option is using Canada Post’s mail forwarding service.

4.Plan the transfer of your Videotron services

Not even a move can come between you and your favourite TV series! Plan ahead by reaching out to Videotron 30 to 90 days before your move.

With Helix self-installation, you can get set up at your own pace for both TV and Internet. And if you prefer, you can always schedule a technician visit to your new home.

5.Pack with what you have on hand

Save money by using what you already have at home. Kids will love to "hide" their toys and other belongings, while your secret strategy is to get them involved in the packing!

  • Fill your pots and pans rather than wrapping them empty, and use towels to protect fragile items.
  • Newspaper, or your sweaters and sports pants, work wonders for wrapping plates and glasses.
  • Sheets and pillows make great packing cushions.
  • Laundry baskets, or even sheets tied in a bundle, are great for packing stuffed animals, balls, and other items.

Extra tip: get a head start by visiting the shops and grocery stores in your neighbourhood. They’ll be happy to give you boxes for free, since they have to recycle them anyway.

6.Arrange a sitter for the kids, the cat, and the dog

Are your children still very young or constantly on the go? Does your pet like to make a run for it? Leave your little ones—and your dog or cat—in the care of someone you trust for the day.

The incessant back and forth of a move can be a source of anxiety for everyone. A stressed dog and a wide-open door is rarely a good combination!

By freeing your mind and picking up your children and furry friends at the end of the day, you will be more focused and better organized.

7.Prepare a few boxes for those last-minute items and essentials

There are always a few last-minute items to pack on the big day, even when you swear you've packed everything! Keep a few extra boxes handy.

  • Box 1: everything you'll need in the short term: large garbage bags, gloves, all-purpose cleaner, paper towels, and screwdrivers.
  • Box 2: your phone chargers and smaller, more fragile electronic items (tablet, laptop, etc.).
  • Box 3: empty, for all those last-minute items you keep finding!

8.Empty the fridge and make sure to have a cooler on hand

In the days leading up to the move, gradually empty your fridge and pantry. The time has come to finally use those dusty cans of chickpeas and whip up that hummus you keep meaning to make!

Bring one or more coolers (if you have an extra freezer). Place frozen food on the bottom and fresh food on top.

Extra tip: it's best to unplug the fridge 24 hours before moving it.

9.Prepare your tech checklist

In a connected home, moving also involves digital preparation. Here are a few steps to plan for:

  • Use a checklist app — to make sure you don’t forget a thing, nothing beats a free planning app. Think of Google Keep or Apple Reminders (there are others). Such apps make it easy to track your tasks by room and priority.
  • Take the opportunity to update your passwords when you change the address of your online services, including your Wi-Fi. To centralize everything, choose a password manager that suits you.
  • Anticipate the possibility of a day with no connection — plan for mobile data or a Wi-Fi hotspot while your Internet service is being installed.
  • Consider downloading movies for the kids — with the Helix TV app, you can watch up to 15 downloaded titles without using your mobile data. While you unpack a few boxes, they can settle into their new environment.
  • Manage your services via Videotron's Customer Centre + app to track your file and make updates on the go. Why not take the opportunity to check out what's new and make sure you’re benefitting from the best offers available?

10.Awaken your inner boss

The chief mover is you!

  • Take the lead, give clear and detailed instructions.
  • Clearly label your boxes according to their destination room in your new home.
  • On moving day, designate a contact person to answer questions, direct traffic — and order the pizza, of course!

Incorporate all these tips into your favourite app’s checklist. When moving day arrives, you can relax, knowing everything is in hand—and start dreaming about your new cocoon.
