Want to keep your Internet searches private? You’re able to clear the history of the websites you visited on all browsers. It’s really easy! Here’s the procedure for the most common browsers and some bonus tips to keep your activities confidential.
Clearing your search history on Google
Google saves two types of data: the list of websites visited (the browsing history) and the keywords you entered to search (the search history). To clear all data, you must delete it in two places.
Deleting your browsing history on Chrome
- Launch the Chrome app on your computer, phone, or tablet.
- Click the three vertical dots icon (More) at the top right, then History.
- Click Delete browsing data.
- Select the period for which you want to delete the history.
- Make sure the Browsing history box is checked. If necessary, check the boxes next to the other data you want to delete, such as cookies, cache files, and saved passwords.
- Click Delete data.

Clearing your search history on Safari
If your Apple devices are synced, simply delete the search history on one so that it’s removed from all the others. This procedure is slightly different on Mac and iPhone or iPad.
On Mac
- Launch the Safari app.
- Click History, then Clear History.
- Click the pop-up menu and select the period for which you want to delete the data.

One step further: clear the cache
Cache memory is used to store temporary information when you visit a website or use an application. When you go back to these websites or apps, they can load faster, and some information may have been saved, such as the contents of an online shopping cart.

Stay incognito (or almost) with private browsing mode
The private browsing mode allows you to visit websites without them appearing in your history. To launch this mode, you can usually right-click on your browser icon (or hold the icon on your mobile) and select New incognito window.
Caution: This mode doesn’t protect you from all forms of tracking. If your organization (school, employer, etc.) manages your device, they can see your history. The information is also available to your telecommunications provider. Also, if you log into your Google account, your activity will still be saved.
Want to be even more anonymous?
Using a virtual private network, commonly known as a VPN, enables you to encrypt your browsing data and IP address. They can no longer be used to send you targeted ads based on your browsing, for example.
Total anonymity doesn’t exist online. That said, deleting your history, browsing in private mode, and using a VPN enables you to increase the confidentiality of your activities.
