When it's cold, it's easy to spend the weekend indoors, glued to your screen. The good news is that winter can also become a very diverse playground, with loads of fun activities to try. Here are 7 suggestions for indoor or outdoor activities that can help break up your routine and get you away from your screens.
Three unique outings to try this winter
1. Uplå: outdoor trampolines open year-round
If you're in the mood for something a little different this winter, Uplå by Arbraska offers a winter forest experience, with daytime (2 hours) or evening (1 hour 30 minutes) options. It's the kind of outing that is sure to elicit a few "wows" from children and adults alike!

4. Indoor camping night
Turn an ordinary Friday night into a memorable event. Get your outdoor blankets and mattresses, inflatable or foam. Have a spacious family room? Add a small tent or show off your creative skills by cobbling together a temporary shelter with sheets.
Make some popcorn and cozy up. Then, play some fun games that don't require any material. For example:
Letter game
Choose a letter from the alphabet, and then each person has to name an animal or object that starts with that letter.
Group storytelling
Make up a story together. Each person adds a sentence (or a section of plot).
Tips to unplug
- Put phones out of reach for the evening, and set them to airplane mode
5. Games for everyone to enjoy
For an activity that appeals to everyone, the trick is to aim for balance. Consider everyone's age, interests, and energy levels, then plan a day (or half a day) in small sequences.
- Each member of the family chooses an activity that they like (puzzles, drawing, board games, crafts, cooking)
- Allot the same amount of time to each activity
- Use the opportunity to discover the interests (and sometimes the talents) of your family members
If you want to make it easier to disconnect during this activity, explore the options for pausing a device in the Helix Fi app.

6. Sliding
It is the "insta-pleasure" activity par excellence. Choose an accessible hill, bring a sled or your favourite gear to hurtle down the slope, and bring a hot drink for the return trip.
Tips for making the fun last
- Alternate descents and breaks to conserve energy . . . especially that of parents
- Bring small blankets to use during breaks, as well as spare mittens and socks, just in case
7. Skating and snowshoeing
Two great physical activities you can rent equipment for.
Skating
- Go at your own pace
- Plan a short outing rather than a long one
Snowshoeing
- Choose an easy trail
- Create an adventurous context with a concrete goal, such as spotting animal tracks
Have fun and connect with your family during the winter season
There is no shortage of winter activity ideas, but the weather can quickly dampen your motivation. A break from screens, even a short one, can change the mood at home. By focusing on activities that bring people together, you multiply the fun moments shared as a family, and chances are you’ll all leave your screens aside, almost without thinking about it.
