Rebooting your router: a simple solution to help speed things up!

Your router is your household’s first point of contact with the network. Even when it’s properly installed and working (strong signal, sufficient coverage), it could be experiencing interference with other sources:


  • Wi-Fi interference

Routers connected to the Wi-Fi network around your home may be using the same frequency channel as your router. The number of channels is limited, especially in cases when the Wi-Fi network is running on frequencies of 2.4 GHz. Most routers, including Videotron’s routers, automatically select the best frequency channel during the initialization phase only. If conditions change in or around your home, the initial channel selection may no longer be optimal. By rebooting your router, you’ll obtain the best channel for your current environment.


  • Other sources of interference

Several other devices— telephones, wireless headphones and speakers, surveillance monitors, microwaves—can cause interference if they also use the 2.4 GHz bandwidth. Avoid this kind of annoyance by setting your router’s bandwidth to 5 GHz.


#2 Is it helpful to unplug and reconnect your router on a regular basis?

Yes. By doing so, you’ll help maintain your Internet connection’s optimal performance. If you never reboot devices that use the same Wi-Fi network frequency, you run the risk of having devices that access the Internet at the lowest programmed speed. This is especially true if you live in a large city or a densely populated area. More routers means more connected devices, and that means a higher chance of interference.


#3 …and what about your modem?

If only one of your devices is lagging, rebooting just the router should be sufficient. However, if all your devices are lagging, you’ll need to reboot your router AND your modem. It could be that in both cases, your router is the problem. If at least one of your devices is working, it generally means your modem is ensuring your Internet connection.


#4 Where in your home should you install your router to ensure the best Internet connection possible?

Your best bet is to place your router in the centre of your home, as close as possible to the area where you’re most likely to use your Wi-Fi network. If your home has three stories, the best place for your router would be on the second floor, in the centre of the room (but of course, no need to install it on your living room table!). 


#5 It’s recommended to opt for 2, 4 or 5 GHz frequency bands. What’s the difference between these three?

5 GHz band has more difficulty passing through obstacles (such as walls), but is less sensitive to interference caused by other devices in your home. Although it has a shorter reach than the other bands, it has a faster transmission speed.
