Legendary composer John Williams can boast an astonishing 51 Academy Award nominations. He received his first nomination in 1967 for the score of Valley of the Dolls. Williams has taken home five Oscars in total, second only to Walt Disney, who received 59 nominations and won 22 times.

Six new rules have been adopted to prevent a repetition of last year's envelope fiasco. In case you missed it, Faye Dunaway announced La La Land as Best Picture winner, but it quickly emerged that the wrong envelope had been opened. The Oscar ultimately went to the team from Moonlight. We can bet you one billion dollars that the gaffe will feature prominently in this year's jokes.

This is only the fifth time that a woman has been nominated for Best Director, namely Greta Gerwig for her film Lady Bird. It is also the fifth time that an African-American director is competing in this category, with Jordan Peele nominated for his debut film, Get Out.90AA Host JK 2.jpg

Jimmy Kimmel will host the Oscars for the second consecutive year. He's far from record-holder in this category. That honour goes to Bob Hope, who hosted 19 times between 1937 and 1977.

For the first time, the nominees for Best Cinematography include a woman, Rachel Morrison, for Mudbound. It's also the first time a woman has been nominated in two separate categories for the same film: Mary J. Blige, for Best Supporting Actress and Best Original Song in Mudbound.
