A person holds an Android phone to take a screenshot

A screenshot lets you show exactly what’s displayed on your phone. Whether you’re sharing something funny, recording something important, showing someone what to do, or reporting a problem, a screenshot is your best friend. Your Android phone has a number of ways to take a screenshot.

Let’s start with the standard method

Most devices will take a screenshot if you press

ON/OFF + VOLUME DOWN

at the same time. But it’s possible that this might not work on your phone. In such cases, check out the detailed procedures below.

Taking a screenshot on a Samsung phone

Display whatever you want to take a screenshot of. Choose one of the following four options:

  • Press On/Off + Volume Down at the same time or, depending on your device, On/OffHome.
  • Swipe the screen from right to left (or left to right) with the side of your hand. This is called the “Palm swipe to capture” feature. To enable it, go to Settings > Advanced features > Motions and gestures.
  • Use the S Pen (if your device has a stylus). Remove the S Pen from its location and select Screen write from the menu that appears.
  • Say “Hey Bixby, take a screenshot.” This feature is available if you have configured Bixby Voice or Google Assistant.

The screenshot will be saved to your Gallery.

Taking a screenshot on a Google phone

Display whatever you want to take a screenshot of. Choose one of the following four options:

  • Press On/Off + Volume Down at the same time.
  • Press and hold the On/Off button for a few seconds, then tap Screenshot.
  • Say “OK Google, take a screenshot” if your device is using Google Assistant.
  • Swipe the screen from the bottom up to display open applications. Scroll left or right to the desired application and press Screenshot. This feature is available if navigation by gestures has been activated in Settings.

The screenshot will be saved in the Screenshots folder of your Photos app or in your Gallery app.

Take your screenshots to the next level with screenshot apps

Specialized screenshot applications have advanced features, like setting image resolution or quality. AZ Screen Recorder, for example, has an easy-to-use menu superimposed on the screen and lets you set a countdown before taking a screenshot. Other apps have similar features but require purchase or subscription. Browse Google Play or the App Store on your device to find the one that suits you best.

What about video capture?

Most recent Android devices allow you to record what’s happening on your screen in video form. Sometimes that’s better than just a picture! Feel free to explore this feature and check your device guide for more details.
